Welcome to Malapascua Island, Philippines

November 5, 2008 · Posted in Philippine Tourist Destinations

Malapascua is a tiny island also called Logon, only about 2.5 kilometers long and 1km wide, located across a shallow strait from the northernmost tip of mainland Cebu. It is situated in the province of Daanbantayan and the island is covered by the insular barangay of Logon (part of the Daanbantayan municipality), with eight hamlets. Visitors can take a dive in the crystal clear ocean at the wreck of a World War II Japanese ship or go snorkeling among the fishes at the many coral reefs surrounding the island, take a trip around the island, or just relax in the white sand and let the wind in the palm trees till you sleep.

As a diving destination, Malapascua was “discovered” fairly recently, only in the early 90s. The island was first known for its wide white sand beach, known as Bounty Beach; it has become known for its beautiful coral gardens and excellent dive spots nearby, including Monad Shoal, an underwater plateau where thresher sharks and manta rays can be sighted on a regular basis. These beaches are some off the most beautiful in the Philippines.

The first dive resort in Malapascua Island was started by Dik de Boer and his wife in 1997. With the local fishermen’s help, two Japanese WW2 shipwrecks were found in addition to the already beautiful dive site of Malapascua Island. The Exotic Dive Resort that Dik established has a selection of thresher sharks, reef dives, and wreck dives.

A walk around the islands takes about two hours. It’s the best way to get acquainted with the local population, and you will enjoy the friendliness of the people. We visit the light tower on the island and enjoy the fantastic view over the island and the Visayan Sea. By boat we make a trip around the island and will discover several white beaches with crystal clear water. We spend some time sunbathing and swimming. It is an adventurous day in paradise.

The best time to go shark diving in Malapascua Island is during the winter months. The dive resorts in Malapascua Island have hosted divers from all over the world including underwater photographers and film crews. The thresher sharks are the main diving attraction in Malapascua Island. They will truly give you an adrenaline rush. But while diving, you can never ignore the biodiversity and richness of the soft corals in this island.
