The Beautiful Island of Masbate, Philippines
Masbate is one of two island provinces in the Bicol region. This beautiful island is also known as the “Wild West” of the Philippines. It is bounded on the north by the Burias Pass and Ticao Pass, on the east by Samar Sea, on the west by the Sibuyan Sea, on the south by the Visayan Sea. The province consists of three major islands (Masbate, Ticao and Burias) and 14 small islands.
Masbate Island partially encloses Asid Gulf which slopes into the Visayan Sea, giving it a shape of an arrowhead. Ticao Island lies in the center of the Philippine Fault but Masbate and Burias are safely out of it. The entire province, however, is in the direct path of typhoons. Mainland Masbate has a short dry season while Ticao and Burias have no dry season at all.
The people of Masbate were formerly called “Visaya” but when the province was transferred to Bicol region during the regime of President Ferdinand Marcos, they were called “Bicolanos” or “Masbatenos”. Many of its people are immigrants from several provinces such as Romblon and Panay Island provinces. The people of Masbate are known as best in agriculture, history, politics and geography means. There are 30 Barangays (or villages) and the estimated population of over 250,000 (in 2008) in Masbate City which is the fastest growing city on the Island.
Masbate City is the capital city of Masbate province. It is the largest city on the Island and geographically located on the North Central coast of the island. Thus, the city is on a small Peninsula which is located just east of Masbate Bay and creates a safe harbour and port. There are many modern hotels and beach resorts located in and around the city and all have a relaxing atmosphere. It is a true tropical paradise surrounded by clear blue water and white sand beaches. There are also various ways to travel to Masbate City by Air and Sea. Asian Spirit Airlines has daily flights from Manila and there are many ships that sail to and from Cebu, Sorsogon, Lucena, and Manila. Cebu and Manila by sea are larger ships and the Fast Craft boats are used in the shorter stretches to nearby Sorsogon and Lucena.
This island is amongst of the best kept secrets of the Philippine islands. Masbate is loaded with agriculuture, natural resources (such as mining for gold), pasture lands for cattle, and its abundent seafood. There are many beach resorts which are very affordable compaired to resorts in high tourist areas.
