Malapascua Island, Cebu

Malapascua is a tiny island which found in the northernmost part of Cebu. The island is approximately about 2.5 kilometers long and 1km wide covered by the insular barangay of Logon (part of the Daanbantayan municipality), with eight hamlets. It only took 45 minutes pumboat ride away from Maya. You can get to Maya easily by taking a 4-hour trip by bus or mini-van from the North Bus terminal in Cebu City. Maya is some 145 kilometers away from the city via narrow and winding road passing through scenic landscapes along the way.

The name Malapascua means ‘Bad Christmas’ in Cebuano native. Legend has it that it was so named because the Spanish first landed here one stormy Christmas Day in the 1500’s. There is some debate about the name however because although ‘mal’ definitely means ‘bad’, ‘pasco’ means Christmas in the local language of Cebuano but “pascua” in Spanish means Easter. So maybe it was a stormy Easter after all.

Malapascua is known for its wide white sand beach, known as Bounty Beach; it has become known for its beautiful coral gardens and excellent dive spots nearby, including Monad Shoal, an underwater plateau where thresher sharks and manta rays can be sighted on a regular basis. This could be the only place in the world where divers can reliably sight thresher sharks. The best time to go shark diving in Malapascua Island is during the winter months. The dive resorts in Malapascua Island have hosted divers from all over the world including underwater photographers and film crews.

There are also several different bars and a wide selection of imported liquor as well as plentiful of imported beers and an extensive cocktail list, we’ll surely satisfy your needs. The island also brings you over hills to tranquil fishing- villages, deserted bays, mountains, and forest with coconut trees.
